1200 poem
series for
a zine
1200 is a dual-poem zine created through co-design. It’s written by a Calgary-based poet and designed by myself. I chose to use muted colours to maintain a vintage feel translated from the writers’ voice, as well as high repetition illustrative assets to create a visual feeling of nostalgia that matches the retro photographs requested in it.

For this co-design project, I was charged with deciding the final print form. Using a zine seemed the most appropriate as the long-form content could contrast the short print form.

Every
The typefaces used are Arial Black and Athelas Bold. Considering the unique physical form of this zine, I used the two fonts interchangeably depending on the visual hierarchy of each page.

The poet requested the use of a film photo within the zine, so I integrated it into the background on a few pages, keeping the vintage grain texture for pages without it for consistency

As a co-design project, there were some strange requests to receive as a typesetter, such as to lower the readability for the long-form poem which resulted in a lowered line-height

As a continual-based contract with this poet, I have learned about their preffered visual elements such as muted colors and out-of-bounds typeset preferences.
