For this project, I wanted to experiment with grunge. This led to spray paint and hand-written typography so classic base-fonts were important. I used Minion Pro Bold and Acumin Variable Concept Semibold.

I loved the contrast of the red corrective pen on my scans in prototyping print, so I chose to keep it but make the “corrective elements” an electric blue. This helped maintain the modernity found in the content of the poems.

The grunge punk-rock poster theme was difficult to integrate with poetry as a writing form so an increase in visual interest was paramount to it’s success. This resulted in some strange elements and illustrative assets making it to print for visual balance.

This mash-up background was a nod to the original design proposal and product, carrying over the faded blackletter for a wild mix of sans serif, handwritten marker, and a heavy gothic.

I chose a heavy-handed overlay for the cover to allude to the writing content, as well as to integrate the author’s first attempt at typography (!!!)

Keeping my scans for this page, we decided on a simple font with an interesting layout to express the pauses and breaths needed when reading this piece. Because poetry often strays from normal syntax and layout, the typeset should too.

This layout was also borrowed from my personal project, with the only notes from the author to “neaten it up”. I love using creative solutions to make the reader understand the cadence of the writing, and this is another example of that.

The final page is an example of what this project would’ve looked like had I not been influenced by my previous version. The gentle balance of image to text diagonally with mass amounts of white space is more conducive to the poets’ visual style.
